Although outsiders consider big cites especially dangerous, they are often safer then medium-sized towns and smaller communities because the former have the benefit of an active street life. there are many retail stores, bars and other venues open 24 hours a day, where people can go in case of trouble. City dwellers know to avoid certain neighborhoods, especially after dark, and to steer clear of unlit areas and alleys. If they take the subway late at night, they tend to congregate in one or two cars, usually close to the front of the train where the conductor is, while the rest of the train remains empty. They know that there is a relative safety in numbers. This also accounts for when you are heading home late at night and your resident safety while you are away.
