Many parents worry about their children losing their house keys, but it happens to many adults as well. In either case, it’s vital to take swift action. If their is no hope to finding the keys quickly, you must have the locks changed immediately. The sooner they are the less likely you are to become a victim of a home invasion.
Criminals watch and wait in parking lots, on the bus or in the subway, for you to drop your keys. They may even quietly snatch them when them when your not looking. They then follow you home and wait for you and your family to go to bed. This could decrease your resident safety. When they feel the “coast is clear,” they use the keys to enter your home.
If you live in an apartment or a college dorm and you lose your key, it’s important to notify your management immediately. Be firm and insist that your locks get changed on the same day. After all, your safety is on the lone! If management refuses to comply wit your request, stay with a friend or family member, or in a hotel, until the locks are changed.
If you want to ensure that your children know how to stay safe, you must explain to them the need to be alert and aware. Don’t assume that they understand the issues involved. It is vital that you teach them specific actions and safety techniques. Make sure they know what’s going on around the neighborhood and school. You do not want to necessarily scare your children, but you also do not want them to let their guard down. Its much like teaching them to cross the street. Unless there is a crossing guard present do not cross to increase their resident safety.
