Two quick-thinking teenagers were able to contact family members for help during an Immokalee home invasion Wednesday night, giving deputies the chance to catch both suspects in the woods shortly after the crime.
Kelly Carter, 21, of the 2000 block of Immokalee Drive in Immokalee, and Alberto Ayala, 19, of the 1700 block of Palm Avenue, Immokalee were arrested by Collier deputies.
Both face charges of kidnapping, home invasion robbery with a firearm and grand theft.
According to reports, the two teens were watching a movie in the loft of a home at State Road 29 when they heard a door creak open below.
One of the teens, knowing his grandfather had just left, went to inspect the noise. On the steps, he saw a man dressed in all black with a mask that only showed his blue eyes. When the man noticed the teen, he walked backwards down the stairs and the teen turned to his friend, whispering for him to call 911.
The teen then texted his grandfather, telling him there were masked men in the home and asking for the code to the gun safe.
He deleted the sent message in time to find one of the masked men standing over him with a gun, demanding his phone before ordering him to the ground.
The men bound the teen’s hands and feetwith zip ties and checked their phones for any evidence that they had called for help. Finding nothing, they asked the teens where the money and guns were hidden.
The teens told deputies the men threatened to kill them and the grandparents before killing themselves if they contacted law enforcement.
The men rummaged around the home then told both of the teens to stay still before running away on foot.
By that time, the grandfather had already contacted deputies who arrived on scene to find the teens tied up.
Using a K9 unit and helicopters, deputies found discarded clothing and backpacks in the woods behind the home. Deputies eventually found both Ayala and Carter who were hiding in the area and wearing clothing described by the victims.
Neither of the teens were seriously injured, but their hands had swollen and turned blue after being bound. They were treated at the scene.
Carter was arrested in Lee County in 2011 on charges of burglarizing an occupied dwelling unarmed. He was arrested again for violation of probation in 2012.
Carter has a record of previous arrests in Collier County including a charge of loitering or prowling in 2011.
He was arrested on charges of possessing marijuana and narcotics equipment that same year. He had a second charge for possessing marijuana in 2012.
Ayala did not have records in either county.
