McALLEN — A second gunman shot during a gunfight in a residential neighborhood Saturday night died, police said Monday.
McAllen police continue to investigate the botched home invasion on the 4800 block of West La Vista Avenue, where gunfire was exchanged leaving two men dead.
Killed in the shootout were 32-year-old Arturo Hinojosa, who had been transported to McAllen Medical Center by emergency crews, and David Means, a 22-year-old man dumped and left for dead Saturday night at Mission Regional Medical Center, said Lt. Joel Morales, a McAllen police spokesman.
The fatalities came after a group of gunmen tried to steal about 1,000 pounds of marijuana inside a house in an upper middle class neighborhood near Nikki Rowe High School. There, the rental house’s tenant, Juan Gabriel Martinez Castillo, fought them off initially injuring one man and
fat ally shooting another, police said.
Police have not said how many men tried to force their way into Martinez’s house when he or another person apparently met them at the door with gunfire, leaving the attackers unable to enter, police have said.
“They never make it past the front door,” McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez said Saturday night. “The indication we have is we have obvious gunfire from in the home, out, we have obvious indicators of gunfire from outside into the home. There was an exchange of gunfire, definitively. The reason, we believe, was to steal a load of drugs.”
