Charleston County sheriff’s deputies are investigating after gunfire erupted in an apparent home invasion near Johns Island early Saturday morning.

A woman was killed in the incident on Greenland Road in the Red Top community, Maj. Eric Watson said.

The Charleston County Coroner’s Office identified the dead woman as Donnetta Heyward, 27, of Charleston. A cause of death will be released pending an investigation, officials said.

Authorities responded to the home shortly after 2:30 a.m., Watson said.

A resident told deputies that three men with guns kicked in his home’s back door and assaulted him and a woman who was there with him.

Two of the invaders forced the woman outside while the third struck the resident on the head, he reported to deputies.

The resident heard two or three rounds fired off outside. The woman returned soon after saying she had been shot, the resident reported.

The woman was transported to Medical University Hospital where she later died from her wounds, Watson said.

The resident was treated and released from St. Francis Hospital for head injuries. He told investigators the invaders were after money.

The invaders fled the scene before authorities arrived.

According to Watson, one of the men is described as a black man, about 5 feet 10 inches tall and 170 pounds.

The other suspects are described as black men, 6 feet tall, 210 pounds, and 6 feet 1 inch tall with a medium build and 185 pounds.

An older model, green, four-door Honda was seen leaving the area shortly after the gunfire, Watson said.
