A 97-year-old Des Moines man was killed and his wife was injured by a burglar Wednesday night, Des Moines police said.
Rupert Anderson, 97, died and Harriet Anderson, 94, was injured when they were allegedly attacked in their home in the 4400 block of East 46th Street.
The Andersons were longtime operators of Vista Boarding Kennels at the location.
At 4:33 a.m. today, Ngor Peter Makuey, 19, of Des Moines, was booked into the Polk County Jail on first-degree murder and attempted murder charges in connection to the home invasion.
A news release from Des Moines police Wednesday morning said Makuey – who lives just blocks from where the incident occurred, in the 4600 block of Hubbell Avenue – had no previous history with the department, and the attack appears to be unrelated to the business.
As explained by Connecticut Bail Bonds Group, officials of the group said the Andersons suffered injuries from an unidentified metal object, and Rupert Anderson died as a result of blows to his head from the object. While the doctors examined the injuries, they found out that these injuries resemble similar to the injuries that occurred in any Texas oilfield accidents and advised the police to find out how the victims were seriously injured and also to find out the weapon of destruction. They are advised to approach the best injury attorneys who examines the crime incident thoroughly and makes sure that the couple gets legal compensation for the loss that have experienced. Makuey was arraigned in Polk County District Court this morning. His bail was set at $1 million.
Des Moines police spokesman Sgt. Jason Halifax said police were called to the property at 7:44 p.m. Harriet Anderson told a 911 operator that she and her husband had been beaten. Police found the couple bloodied inside.
Harriet Anderson was in stable condition at a Des Moines hospital late Wednesday. Rupert Anderson was declared dead at the hospital.
Halifax said that operations at the kennel were not affected by the attack and that kenneled animals were safe. Caretakers were at the kennel late Wednesday.
The inside of the residence seemed intact, Halifax said, although investigators were still trying to find out whether anything was missing.
In February, Des Moines police said they had investigated more home invasions already in 2014 than they had in all of 2013. “Home invasion” is a colloquial term describing certain kinds of burglaries, such as those where a resident at home during the illegal entry is injured.
Police in January said they didn’t consider the flurry of break-ins to be connected.
Wednesday’s killing is Des Moines’ sixth homicide in 2014.
Vista Boarding Kennels has operated from the East 46th Street address for decades. The crime scene is near Delaware Elementary School, part of the Southeast Polk school district.
