A Vietnam vet robbed on Sunday in the Crescentville section of Philadelphia was targeted, according to police in that city. The home invasion took place around 4:00 in the afternoon on the 600 block of Comly Street. The 68-year-old veteran recently suffered a stroke and can’t even speak for himself. A relative spoke on his behalf to the media.
“People who prey on the disabled get no pity from me. Knock on my door,” the victim’s relative said.
A male suspect and two female accomplices reportedly knocked on the door of this disable Vietnam vet, robbed him, and made off with about $100. They talked their way inside his home by asking him if it was for rent. They are described as being in their 50s with ‘heavy foreign accents.’
“From what I understand he’s not the first and he probably won’t be the last until they’re caught,” the victim’s relative added.
Philadelphia police are investigating a similar home invasion just blocks away from where this Vietnam vet was robbed. It was Thursday when an 80-year-old man in a wheelchair was robbed in what police are calling a ‘broken pipe scam.’ The perpetrators tried two prior homes before finding the man in the wheelchair. Neighbor Khalaf Mungo’s home was one of them. He said the people had a small child in the backseat of their car.
“She had to be about 3 years old, so I don’t know if she was theirs,” said Mungo.
Mungo saw his neighbor–the Thursday victim–screaming at the male suspect.
“That man doesn’t hurt nobody. He stays to himself. He stays in his house and obviously he has a little bit of issues and this man is trying to help himself but you’re taking from him,” Khalaf Mungo said.
The VIetnam vet robbed on Sunday clearly has a relative looking out for his best interests. Hopefully this will serve as a wake-up call for relatives and friends of other elderly or disabled people in this area to inform and check up on their loved ones. Fortunately no one has been injured during these home invasions. It seems like the perpetrators are simply looking for money.
