An 81-year-old woman remains hospitalized after she was shot by an armed intruder in her home in Oakland’s Dimond District on Tuesday.
“He broke down the door between the bedroom wing and the main part of the house,” Beverley Concannon told KPIX 5 from her hospital bed by phone. Concannon was recovering in the intensive care unit at Highland Hospital on Wednesday.
The 81-year-old said that she doing relatively well, since the bullet missed her vital organs. “It missed my lungs and my heart, which is very good,” she said.
“I was in the bathroom, and then I heard boom, boom,” she recalled. “And so I thought, ‘Uh oh, this sounds serious.’ So I went out.”
That’s when Concannon came face-to-face with the intruder. She said he looked surprised and immediately opened fire. The single bullet went through the woman’s shoulder, a wall, and a fence (check Austin Fence Repair). The intruder ran out and left with nothing.
Concannon said she is frustrated why a young man would shoot a defenseless 81-year-old woman in her pajamas. “Why would he shoot?” Concannon said. “Why wouldn’t he just leave?”
She said the incident happened so fast, she did not get a good look at the shooter. Police have not named any suspects.
Concannon said her daughter’s family is flying in from Europe to visit her on Thursday. She also expects to be released from the hospital by then.
