Man Locked in Trunk during Home Invasion
Police are searching for three men after a reported home invasion ending with the homeowner locked in the trunk of his own car on Stevenson Road Tuesday night, according to police.
Officer David Hartman said in a release that the 38-year-old homeowner was reportedly able to free himself from his trunk but not before the three suspects escaped. The 38- year-old man, who owns the home, described the suspects as the following: a tall, black man with an average build, wearing a black, hooded sweatshirt, black face mask and carrying a handgun; a thin, black man with a light complexion, approximately 5 feet 9 inches tall and wearing a red, hooded sweatshirt; and a black man in his early 30s with a husky build, wearing a gray, hooded sweatshirt and carrying a revolver.
Police responded to the scene around 11:30 p.m., and the homeowner told Officer Francisco Ortiz that he had been robbed and locked in his car trunk. The homeowner told Ortiz he had been home with his 2-year-old daughter and 13-year-old son when he heard footsteps. He said he was confronted by a masked man, allegedly holding a handgun, who demanded money. Hartman said the homeowner told Ortiz he handed over the cash he had as two other men entered the room.
Hartman said the homeowner told the men he had no more money and one of the suspects allegedly po inted a gun at the children before pistol-whipping the homeowner in the face, insisting he did have more money. The homeowner told the suspects he had more cash in his car, so the suspects brought the two children to the bathroom, unharmed, before bringing the homeowner to the garage. Hartman said the homeowner handed over an undisclosed amount of money from the car and then was allegedly locked in the trunk. The homeowner said he was able to free himself within minutes, but the suspects had left.
Detectives from the New Haven Police Department Robbery and Burglary Unit are investigating the case.
