Many people give and receive expensive gifts during the holiday season, but have you ever thought about what you do with the packaging? Usually, playing with your new, expensive gift is more important than trash. However, leaving big boxes by the curb for trash pick-up alert criminals of exactly what new toys you have. So how can you keep yourself protected?
The most important thing to do is make sure you are not too flashy with your gifts. Break up the boxes your gifts came in and put them inside a trashcan. Don’t advertise to the neighborhood that you have a new flat screen TV or a new computer. Make sure you don’t put your big electronics near a window where everyone passing by can see what you have.
Having a new toy can be exciting, and you may want to show it off, but be careful of who you show it off to or it may be stolen from you. Social media is important to this generation and during the holiday season, lots of people post pictures of all their gifts for all of Facebook to see. You may think this is ok because you are showing people you know, however, friends, business associates, or family members commit 11% of home invasions.
Crime spikes during the holiday season. Be sure to keep your doors and windows locked, even if you are home. If you have a security system, keep it activated at all times. Don’t just assume you are being paranoid, you can never be too cautious.
