Be Smart About Who Comes into Your Home

After looking at many other home security blogs, we have run across several that provide information that we feel will give you a false sense of safety.

We are going to start with talking about what you should do when somebody that you don’t know knocks on your door. We have read several blogs that said you should ask for identification of the person knocking. We do agree with this. However, you shouldn’t open the door for a stranger even after they have given you some form of ID. You have no way of knowing if the ID they provided was real or if it is fake. Most of the time, you can talk to the visitor through your front door. It isn’t necessary to open the barrier that the door provides.

If the person on your porch appears to work for the cable, electricity, police, or any other type of company, always ask for a number of a supervisor to contact. Remember, even if you do contact a supervisor, you are not required to open the door. The number could lead to an accomplice pretending to be a supervisor.

If it is a police officer, call 911 to double check that the person on your porch is indeed a police officer. Most police officers will understand if you tell them that you are double-checking that they are real. It is their goal to keep you safe, so don’t hesitate to call 911. Criminals are capable of dressing up as many different workers and knocking on your door. This gives them easy entrance to homes.

It never hurts to have a TV or radio on, even when you are not home. Criminals are less likely to invade your home if they know someone is home. An empty home is an easier target. If you believe the person knocking is a suspicious person, find out as much information as you can about them, then call 911.

Keep in mind that you should never let a stranger in your home to use the bathroom or borrow your phone. There are public restrooms at most convenience and grocery stores. Letting a stranger into your home to use yours isn’t necessary. In this decade, most people have cell phones. If you believe they truly they need your help, offer to make the phone call for them. Allowing someone you do not know in your home for your phone puts you at risk for an attack.

Other excuses may include someone needing your signature for a package, asking for your answers on a survey, trying to sell you a product, or even saying they hit your car and need to share their insurance information. If you know for a fact you did not order a package, don’t open the door to sign for one. Surveys can be answered through the door, or not at all. If you are interested in the product being sold, as for a website or phone number to order over the phone. If someone has hit your car, tell them to write down their insurance information, name, and phone number, and ask them to leave the piece of paper either in your mailbox, or on your porch.
